Sweden Euro 2020 Squad(Players List), Strengths, Weakness, Predictions: Sweden with its unbeaten talent is very optimistic in the upcoming major tournament Euro 2020 Championship. Where its neighboring country, Norway is all set to exhibit sharp performance, there’s an opportunity for Scandinavian to rise at every level of the event.
With a loss against England at the 2018 World Cup tournament, after two years the team has come up strongly and wisely and bears all chances to counter the rest in at the European Championships. Sweden executed stellar knock in the qualifying match, thereby losing only one match against Spain, giving tough competition with minimal fuss.
Strength
Sweden strengths lie in their ability to strike goals which are expected to create an unpredictable and potential threat to the opponents. Looking at the record so far, they have managed to score 23 goals over their ten qualifier matches, surprisingly scored by 11 different players, with four different strikers hitting the net at some stage. Robin Quaison has emerged as one of the top players in the team positioned as the top players in the ten out of five appearances. Also, he is supported by the marquee and experienced Marcus Berg, enigmatic youngster Alexsandar Isak and the wildcard entrant John Guidetti.
Also, another star Winger Viktor Claesson is expected to make a comeback with a bang this summer, after going through an injury. In the latest four encounters, he has hit three goals and thus there’s a reason to expect more from him.
There’s a one-man who could only replace Viktor is star man Emil Forsberg. The central defensive line stands strong with key players Victor Lindelof and experienced captain Alexander Granqvist. The duo has struck a formidable balance in the team, with six clean sheets in ten of the qualifying encounters. They have also kept three clean sheets in their five games at the 2018 World Cup. These charts signal the strength of the team at the Euro Championship 2020.
Weakness
Even though the team has managed six clean sheets in ten, none of these sheets came against the strong contender Norway or Spain – with the Faroe Islands, Malta and Romania the three sides shut out. Though their strength lies in the defense, with top-four standing at the top, it is more crucial to pay attention at the underwhelming full-back options.
Their main weakness lies in the lack of creative prowess in midfield, as the majority of them are suffering from a shortage of pace and physicality in the central areas. 33 year-old former Celtic man Mikael Lustig is always their first choice positioned at the right-back, and also 31-year-old Copenhagen defender Pierre Bengtsson is at the top spot. But one can’t rely on them in the major tournament.
Albin Ekdal and Kristoffer Olsson are the preferred combination along with Sebastian Larsson if included in when Claesson is fit. The team has to look after the major lagging central midfield unit that often struggles to showcase upfront in the game against the elite sides.
Prediction
There are huge chances of the team qualifying at the group stages. The possible reunion with Spain is hardly imaginable managing to secure a place at the qualifying stage, but they won’t fear the prospect of Poland, nor will they mind tackling on the winner of Path B playoff – one of Bosnia & Herzegovina, Northern Ireland, Slovakia or the Republic of Ireland.
With the top best four third-placed teams qualifying, you’d support Sweden to mark their place in the round of 16. And if the team by chance avoids the leading elite teams in the qualifying team, then you will see Sweden at the quarter-final round for sure.
However, it doesn’t seem to be an easy task, to repeat the heroics of 1992. To mark a place at the semi-finals looks far beyond for the team, that are still coming together as a group.
Unless it is benefitted by the luck of draw, there’s as of no reason for Andresson and his team to rejoice.
